    Dashboard: what's the point?
Do any of you use it? I've been trying, on and off, for awhile now to try to justify its existence by finding some type of application for it, but I've been largely unsuccessful.

The only possible niche I've found for it is to run informational widgets to conglomerate a lot of ready-to-display information (e.g. weather, CPU usage, etc) on the screen at once and quickly without having to launch full-fledged applications or visit a bunch of web pages. I'm also trying it out now for lightweight versions of one-shot applications, i.e. applications I'd launch to use once quickly and then quit (calculator, dictionary, thesaurus, and stuff like that).

    What do you all think?

    Best way to ensure redundancy?
I am a photographer in Portland, OR. I have two 1.5 TB drives I use to store my clients' files. They are set up to be redundant backups of one another so that if one drive fails (or if I have a studio fire), I can get the backup from home and still have everyone's wedding safe and sound.

This would be a simple process if I only used one drive for my actual work, but I like to work both at home and at the studio. This means that high end edits of certain files are created on one drive without being created on the other. Base files are easy -- I just dump my CF cards to both drives at the same time, creating the base redundancy.

My question is this: is there a program that will automatically detect differences between the two drives and tell me where they are, or, better yet, merge the differences so that I can at least have a report of what needs to be moved where?

ETA: I'm not looking for another backup solution. We've got that. These are our working drives but they need to be mirror images of each other so we always have access to all the files. I need software that will effectively point out where the differences are so I can fix them.

    Lyrics Importer for Itunes?
Anyone have a lyrics importer that they like to use?

I've done a little googling but some of the widgets/apps/importers seem to be malware of some sort, so I thought I'd ask here...

    I've got a MacBok running OS 10.4.11

    Thanks!

    Two Computer to One Computer
My wife had an iMac at work and a PowerBook G4 at home. She now has a new MacBook Pro from work. Her work set up her iMac account on her MBP, but we also want to transfer her PB account to the MPB and have two separate accounts; one for one, one for home/personal use. Before I get it going, does anyone know if Migration Assistant will have a problem putting an account on a machine with a main account already set up. We'll be using the same user name from the PB on the MBP for the personal account.

Let's make a happy community about reviewing Apple Stuff
I want to let you know that I have created a few communities (because I couldn't decide on what spelling to use) that are meant to seed discussion about the relative merits and weaknesses of Apple products and acknowledge that while no human construct is perfect, we choose to spend our time, money, and attention on these devices and software.

All are welcome, except those who can't play nice.

Feel free to join the community on the user profile pages, and get to discussing!

Pick your favorite spelling or more:
    [info]apple_critic
    [info]applecritics
    [info]critics_of_aapl

And to be honest, if none of these go anywhere, I'm not too upset.  I just thought that while outsiders, noobs, and die-hard PC users may deem any Mac user as a "Mac Lover" which may be true, but it doesn't mean we "hate" everything else.  I myself use Windows and Linux on a daily basis, and each has it's merits and finesse that are unique.  And other platforms adopting those elements is not a failure of adoption, but a win for all users!

So, if you happen to like Apple products and you've got something you want to share, a cool feature, a point of frustration, come share it with us.  Maybe someone can help out or you can help them out!

If you think you want to help moderate one of these communities, I'm welcome to help too.

    Address Book?
In Address Book, is there a way to link entries without using a plug-in? I'm preparing my mother's computer for our iPhone purchase next week, and a large number of her phone book entries we entered are for a single family (we'll call them Smith for ease of use), and it'd be nice if on Grandpa Smith's entry if she could easily see links to Grandpa Smith's kids Anna, Beth, Cameron, etc., who are also in Address Book and have married names that aren't Smith, and not have to search them out independently.

I say again without using a plug-in, since the true purposes of this functionality is to have the same thing happen on her iPhone (maybe this would be better posted in an iPhone community, but...). I don't have as much of a need for this functionality personally, and for her it needs to be kept remarkably simple because it was only a week or so ago that I taught her what "copy" and "paste" were (and yes, it was as fun as it sounds), so I'm not sure a third party App is going to be the way to go right now - I'd rather go without it than make the whole thing too complex.

    Change display orientation quickly?
Generally speaking, System Preferences lets you change your display orientation to (say) 90 degrees, handy for monitors that rotate.

The process involves several steps: open System Preferences, click on Display, click on the orientation pop up menu, select the desired orientation, and then confirm.

Does anyone know a quick (e.g. one-click) way to make this change? I'm about to start a project where I'll need to rotate my monitor back and forth between landscape and portrait, and it'd be handy to be able to switch the display preferences quickly each time.

Command + ~ Not working to toggle thru windows in one app
    Hey all--

I have a whole bunch of word docs open, and I need to toggle back and forth between them.

Usually, I use open-apple (we call that "command" now, right?) and the tilde (~).

    But, it's now not working.

This has happened before, and I think I had to reboot and it worked again.

    So...

    1) Is there a way to get this working again without rebooting?

    2) Is there a way to prevent it from happening again?

    THANKS!

    Broken Dashboard
A few days ago my widgets, with the exception of 2 or 3 stopped working: they just load halfway, if at all. This happens to both Apple as well as 3rd party widgets.

I've tried repairing permissions, resetting PRAM, trashing preference files, but... nothing.

These widgets were working fine for years. Any suggestions on how to repair this problem?

    Thanks In Advance.

    Time Machine Backup Question
I'm looking through the Apple support docs and I'm not finding anything on this --

I need to know if it is possible to put the Time Machine backups I have on one external harddrive onto another harddrive? I'm aware of the fact that it will delete old/previous backups that were made, but I'd like to keep multiple TM backups in case of drive failure.
